K-Pop: Adios 2008

Came across this great mash-up of all the best songs from Korea in 2008.
Hope you enjoy it too! (^_^)b

Marvel buyout updates

In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got "pretty excited, pretty fast." They say there's definitely an opportunity there.

The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America" and "The Avengers" stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. "When the time comes we'll take a closer look at it." It was actually stated that the deal still included five films, so that is one more film after "The Avengers."

This all sounds very, very good :D

Disney Buys Marvel for 4 Billion dollars!!!!

with Disney`s family-friendly policies, is this the end for Marvel?

Korean Movie Mega Review! Part 2

All For Love (2005)
Drama/Romance
7/10

I always enjoy these Love-Actually type movies where a bunch of different stories intertwine with each other. Situations never seem to go stale as a result and thankfully, the Korean film industry has produced a couple of films like this

Plot: Stories of romance and drama intertwine, with elements of comedy.

Almost Love (2006)
Drama/Romance
7.5/10

I think i have enjoyed every movie that the main stars, Haneul Kim & Sangwoo Kwone have been in so naturally i enjoyed a movie that pairs them together.

Plot: Two childhood friends, one wants to be an actress and the other wants to be a famous stuntman like Jackie Chan, find that there might be something more to their relationship

Antique (2008)
Comedy
8/10

Loved this movie! It actually sounded quite boring and i was reluctant to watch it but im really glad i did. For the entire movie i didnt even think about where the story was heading and then at the end the movie completely flips into something else. Each of the characters was fun :)

Plot: Dude opens a cake store to meet chicks and hires an ex-pro boxer, a homosexual and
a family friend. However, there is something deeper underlying the whole thing.

April Snow (2005)
Drama/Romance
5/10

The overall tone of this movie just bored the crap out of me. Way too gloomy and just not a whole a lot going on.

Plot: Two people have an affair only to end up in a tragic accident. The spouses of the two realise what has been going on and start an affair of their own

Bungee Jumping Of Their Own (2001)
Drama/Romance
6/10

This movie was kinda creepy for me but i gave it a fairly decent score of 6.5 because Byunghun Lee`s acting was really good. Despite the strange circumstances you really felt for him and his anguish. On another note, i didn`t really read much about this film before i saw it and so what happens in this movie was NOT what i was expecting lol

Plot: Two youngsters in love, later seperated. Years later, as a teacher, the guy discovers similarities between the girl he loved and one of his male students :s

Heres all the scores so far in descending order (movies with same score are in aplhabetical order):
  1. A Moment To Remember 9.5/10
  2. A Man Who Was Superman 8/10
  3. Antique 8/10
  4. Almost Love 7.5/10
  5. A Millionaire's First Love 7/10
  6. All For Love 7/10
  7. Bungee Jumping Of Their Own 6/10
  8. 200 Pounds Beauty 5/10
  9. A Tale Of Two Sisters 5/10
  10. April Snow 5/10
Ten movies in and thats only A-B covered. Phew! this is just the tip of the iceberg i'm telling you! but i really hope that somebody can find these notes helpful and come to love Korean movies like i do :)

Upcoming Movies: The Tournament

As stupid as this movie may look to some people, the plot is the kind of action movie you dream of:

a group of thirty top-notch assassins that converge on a different unsuspecting town every seven years to hold a “last man standing” style contest. In this case, all the losers die and the winner receives ten million dollars While they battle, a group of men with more money to waste the than the US government, hold bets on anything that happens ala Rat Race.

Plus it has Kelly Hu ;D

Korean Movie Mega Review! Part 1

Yes Part 1!! Thats because there are soooo many good movies from Korea! There was a time when i watched about 4 or 5 Korean movies a week but im starting to run low as i dont really know which ones are good or not so i try to find reviews online or i just take a chance. Which is why i made this post! so that you can get another persons opinion on them.

These are some of the Korean movies i have seen listed with title, genre, my personal rating and a summary of the plot (there are no spoilers! (^_^)b):

200 Pounds Beauty
Romance/Comedy (2006)
5/10

I know a lot of people loved this movie but i was bored throughout and the ending was waaaaayyyy too obvious. Also the scenes where she is fat were awkward as hell and cringe worthy

Simplified Plot: "Big" Lady desires to become slim, gets her wish and tries to win over her crush

A Man Who Was Superman (2008)
Comedy/Drama
8/10

The main character, Superman, is really adorable and this movie was pretty funny at times but when it needed to be serious, it worked just as well.

Simplified Plot: Crazy guy goes around claiming he is superman but cant use his powers because of Kryptonite embedded in his skull. An x-ray scan reveals some truths..... (seriously this is the story, you`ll love it :D)

A Moment To Remember (2004)
Drama/Romance
9.5/10

I probably should never give a movie 10/10 but if i was ever to award a movie a perfect score, this would come very close. Easily the saddest movie i have ever seen and you cant help but feel for the couple in this movie. :(::::

Simplified Plot: BWAAAAAAAAA !!!!!! :`(p_q)`:

A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003)
Horror/Drama/Mystery/Thriller
5/10

I really didnt get this movie. In the end, i think i understood what happened but i felt it was a little too overcomplicated. Oh yeah and i was expecting it to be scary, which it wasn't

Simplified Plot: Something about Two Sisters, i dont really care to elaborate :p

A Millionaire's First Love(2006)
Romance
7/10

Unless a movie was really great or really bad, i dont have a lot to say about it. I just simply enjoyed this movie

Simplified Plot: Millionaire cant inherit his moneyz. The deal? graduate from a high school in the countryside! Find love in the process? (^_^)b

Yokohama - The Journey Part I

Yaaaay i can finally talk about something more interesting, going to Japan. Hopefully i dont have to talk about crap for a while now and things start to get interesting :)

The Certificate Of Eligibility
Received my Certificate of eligibility this weekend. This is the piece of paper that you have to take with you to the embassy, along with your passport, so that you can be put onto a student visa when you arrive in Japan and get your alien registration card. Yes, thats right, alien!

More Photos?
For those people who are coming to Japan next year, during this whole process you need soo many passport sized photos that it becomes ridiculous. I already gave 6 or something into Jan and now when i arrive in Yokohama they want 3 more! i mean, what do they do with all these photos? Do my Japanese tutors carry them around in their wallets like im an adoptive son?

Flying To Japan
Come 30th of September, i am outta here!
You cant move into the Minesawa International Student House (my dorm) until the 5th of Oct but we decided to fly out early and spend 2 nights in Tokyo and 2 nights in Yokohama.

Painting 4 Realz Part VI

An update

Not much i can do at the moment as the colours i want, i dont have. So at some point im gonna need to find an art store in the area and buy brushes, paints and canvases.

Painting 4 Realz Part V: Patience is the key.....

WIP (work in progress)

Drew the image in firstly with pencil and am currently highlighting all of those lines. In the process, i`ve realised that i dont really have many of the colours i will need to make this painting look good so im gonna have to buy some new paints and a new brush for fine detail.

Patience is the key.....

Music: Marvel Vs Capcom 2 Arcade rerelease Mixtape. Download here!!

Doesnt seem like Capcom made the release publicly yet :s so anyway The Koalition has it up as a free download for those who came here looking for it.

Loved:

-Namedropping and game references. Good example: "Superheroes" by Planet Asia & DJ Toure. Definitely my favourite track on the whole cd.
-Bits of the game music being mixed/dropped in. Which leads me to......

Loved/Hated:

-"I`m gonna take you for a ride..." LOL! i guess this is more of an in-joke for those who played the game to the death. Drives me mad sometimes >:(. You gotta love it for how stupid it is though.

Disliked:

-It would have been nice to have some more references to the actual game rather than tracks about gaming in general or tracks which are virtually unrelated (E40, im lookin at YOU)

At the end of the day, just be glad we didn't have to put up with anything as bad as "The Hulk Song"

I can do the Hulk
I can do the Hulk
W-w-w-w-w-w-watch me do the Hulk

Painting 4 Realz! Part 3

So today, i attemped my first canvas based artwork. Bearing in mind that this is only the second time i have ever tried to paint since high school (i was advised by my teacher not to take art actually :s ), i thought this turned out pretty good!

Painting 4 Realz! Part 2

Not the most exciting of images but i got out of it what i wanted which was to get my feet wet with this painting shizzle. Mission Accomplished!
I also learnt some things from this:

I need:
- better brushes
- more acrylic paints
- a steadier hand

Also, Acrylic paints dry very fast!

This`ll make a nice present for my newly-born nephew then (^_^)b

Painting 4 Realz!

Was watching TV last night and there was some lady who had a house full of really crap paintings. I mean, they looked like she had painted them all whilst under the influence of alcohol and yet the show hosts thought they were amazing! So i figured, im going to challenge the art world on an extra medium. Add an extra dimension to my artistricity (no idea if this is a real word).

So anyways im serious!! so i set out today, i bought a cheapy art set and set about choppin somethin up. I wanted to see if it was possible for me to recreate some of my digital art with paints and a canvas. voila!......

Im pretty convinced that i can do something major here.

Imagine when you can own your very own masterpiece by yours truly ;D. Why not comission me for some art work. You can buy me lunch and we can talk it over (^_^)b

Music: Bun B feat. Rick Ross, David Banner, 8ball & MJG

Continuing the trend to rewind a little bit and pick up on some songs that i think other people missed (maybe they just didnt like them?)

I cant tell you how much i love the sampling of Jodeci's "Cry For Me" and the way it fits the track superbly.

"Pray at night, when you sellin white"

Music: New Boyz - "You're A Jerk"

If you aren't with it yet, then get with it. This track has been around a while now but i've been expecting big things from it when it starts to go a bit more global. Its good to see young artists coming through and just making fun music. Yeah, some of the lyrics are kinda crap in some places but at least they are having fun with it. I get so tired of angsty conscious rap.

I especially love the video for all the Tees and Kicks, lookin colourful as hell! Skinny Jeans though? No thanks

Sunday, 23 August 2009

Music: "Gee" Rnb Remix by The D.A.Y.

You`ve all heard Gee about a billion times by now right? No? Well....

now maybe you`ve heard it at least once :p. This song is incredibly infectious and admittedly, i was playing this song like crazy i played it a couple of times but i dont think i can ever get tired of the video ;D

Anyway, i came across an RnB version/cover a while back by a much lesser known duo called "The D.A.Y." that i really wanna share in case you haven't heard it because its sooo good. My play count for this track on itunes was somewhere near 300-400 (i listen to music all day :p) before my hard drive failed and i lost all my play count info :( (my favourite song was at over 2,000 plays!!)

Hope You Enjoy!!

Upcoming Discussion: Comic Books

There isn`t a lot for me to do at the moment as i wait for Japan so i recently hauled my comic books down from the attic to just casually flick through some of them. Pictured above are most (note: not ALL :s) of my comic books. Occasionally i might blog about some of them in the future like for example, my favourite covers, good storylines, character appreciation etc. Ill also only do this based on Comic books that i actually own.

John's Art - Ryu *Updated & Finished

Created with zero reference material at hand now finally completed, saturated the colours a little further and then threw the street fighter logo over the top. lookin good :D

For further reference, this was the version i uploaded yesterday whilst still incomplete (belt incomplete, less saturation, no logo)

Layout changes: Hal 9000 successfully (?) integrated into the blog

You will now notice, to the right hand side, the presence of the blog`s very own super computer, the Hal 9000. I did actually have it coded to play sound files when you clicked on it (even tested it on my site so i know that my code was correct) but unfortunately blogspot doesn't allow that kind of coding on here. Bummer!

Some more minor changes too such as colours and stuff. I`ll get there eventually :p

Korean Movie Review: "Breathless" (2009)

It just felt like another one of those much-ado-about-nothing Korean movies where not a great deal actually happens but this is one of the things i love about Korean cinema

Overall Rating: 7/10

Story:

Violent & antisocial gangster/debt collector Yang Soon, tortured by dramatic events in his past, befriends and finds comfort in a young high school girl with similar problems of her own.

Loved:
- The main character Yang Soon, played by Yang Ik-Joon, is a loveable asshole. He treats absolutely everybody in this movie like crap and its funny because you love him for it. Its just kinda how he is. This movie definitely has its funny moments, well-placed amongst the seriousness of the movie.

Disliked:
- The swearing in the movie. I think it didnt help that i saw this movie with bad subtitles already but if anyone doesnt know how to swear in Korean, they will certainly know how after watching this movie. And just about everyone is talking crap to each other too. Like i said though, i think the subtitles i had didn`t help much.
- At around 130 mins, Breathless felt just a little bit too long :s

It just felt like another one of those much-ado-about-nothing Korean movies where not a great deal actually happens but this is one of the things i love about Korean cinema. I love when a movie just takes you by the hand and walks you along like that. I dont need big twists and excitement to enjoy a movie. Sometimes it can feel like nothing really happened at all, as i find in many Korean movies and i end up loving them for it almost every time.
After reading up a but about the film afterwards, It`s awesome to learn that Yang Ik-Joon played the main role, produced and (for the first time in his career) directed the movie himself.

Note: The Korean title for this movie, Ddongpari, literally means "dung fly". Seemingly refers to Breathless` main character, the kinda person you dont really want around you or cant seem to shake.

New Site Layout: 2010 Theme

I`m Back! actually, i dont have anything so important to blog about but i did get around to revamping my site at johnjfreeze.com in inspiration of the movie "2010: The Year We Make Contact". The site as a whole is now way more simplified and i think it will function more correctly as i can do everything i need to through the blog. Expect the blog to go through some minor changes as i try to get the site and the blog more in sync with each other (^_^)b

Tuesday, 11 August 2009

Blogging will resume shortly......

Moved back home for what remains of the Summer.
Experienced some internet problems which i have now fixed :D.
Back on track Soon

Past Week Wrap Up August 7th Edition

Rather than talk on negatives, i`d rather talk about the positives. So this Past Week Wrap Up thing is just to highlight some things i saw over the previous week which i thought deserved some extra attention.

BBC "Mission Patch" collection

Really loved these designs. I think its because lately im really digging Space lol. Have gone back and watched some of my favourite space movies "2012", "Sunshine" etc. Still, these shirts are ridiculously expensive at just over 7,000yen :s

Freshjive x John Downer

Young Jeezy x Adidas: Snowman Adidas

GI JOE: Complete Series Collector's Set

I`m not really into GI Joe but that that is a nice collectors edition :D

Contexture Design - Cassette vs Ipod
Nano Cases

Playaz Circle - "Look What I Got"

Tea or Coffee sir? No thanks

Shakin like a crack addict

Well not really but yeah i just recently gave up drinking tea and coffee. I did this once before and managed to do it for about 3 months or so. Im not addicted or anything, i just enjoy the taste of tea and coffee :). Im giving it up because its something that i really enjoy and at the same time i love to give it up. Im not sure how to explain other than the challenge of giving something up like this seems fun to me. Well, let's see how far i can get :p

Gi Joe: Rise Of Cobra - Review (possible minor spoilers!!!)

"This was probably one of the most stupid movies i have ever seen but with that aside, i actually enjoyed it."
Overall Rating 5/10

So Phil managed to persuade me to go see GI Joe. I wasnt expecting much, especially considering that GI Joe: A Real American Hero, the animated series known as GI Joe: International Hero for us across the pond, was never really that big over here as it was in the states. Much of the toy line had some confusion as it was housed under the Action man name and Action Force. Also, my parents would never buy me GI Joe toys and all i had was some board game that i couldnt understand because i didnt really have a clue what was going on with the characters.

So anyway, my thoughts on the film:
This was probably one of the most stupid movies i have ever seen but with that aside, i actually enjoyed it. As usual though, i'll make the review brief.

Loved:
*Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow. Largely because of Byung-Hun Lee (I`m gonna write about this dude in another article soon (^_^)b)
*Quaid. His role was really minor and one-note but for me, he always has great screen presence and given we could take him back about 10 or 15 years, he would make a great Captain America.

Loved/Hated:
The action scenes were great except that some of the action scenes actually worsened the movie like all that underwater crap that was going on :s

Hated:
*The Ripcord/Scarlett relationship. Awkward & with no feeling at all.
*The lame attempts at comedy
*The "Yo Joe" line near the end. soooooooo awkward lol
*"Boom Boom Pow" during the credits. I think sometimes Hollywood wants to see just how much crap you are willing to swallow. Doesnt even seem like they thought much about the ending theme other than what they thought was "in" at the time. SMH

I wont say too much as i promised only minor spoilers but yes it is very stupid but i think if you can go into this movie expecting a complete bulls* stupid movie with no real intelligence then you will enjoy it. But honestly, i cant reccomend you pay for it.

John`s Art - Art Dump Part 2: Japanese/Yakuza Theme

Avengers: Is Norton letting on about Hulk?

Ed Norton, when asked about wether or not he is going to be in the Avengers movie:

"I probably won't comment on that, just because they [Marvel] keep a pretty tight reign on what they are letting out. I'll let them say,"
I`m gonna go ahead and get my hopes up :D

Considering all the rumours about the problems between Marvel and Norton, i`m pretty sure if he wasnt a part of the Avengers movie he would`ve just said. I guess this at least means he`s open to discussion on his own involvement in that particular project. We might find out sooner though, when Iron Man 2 is released, if rumours of the Bruce Banner cameo are true

John`s Art: One Piece - Franky

Ok so he doesnt look exatcly like Oda`s Frankie but if i drew him like that, it would just look every other fan drawing of One Piece. I wanted this one to look more like it came from my own drawing style and im pretty happy with it :D except for the chain is kinda crap and he probably needs more teeth :s (easily fixable :p)

John`s Art - Art Dump Part 1: Marvel

I seriously love Marvel Comics. As a library of characters and storylines its amazing and no other company on this planet can boast something similar to what they have. Its like Downey Jr. said:

"You Know What? F*** DC Comics"
- Robert Downey Jr in an interview with Moviehole

Well, its kinda not what i was saying but i wanted to throw that in anyway :p

It can easily be said that i have Marvel comics to thank for the progression of my skills as an artist. From Marvel comics, i have been given something to draw whenever i like. If i ever get stuck there is always a character or storyline that i can pick from my memory to inspire me and so here are my Marvel artworks drawings:

Nothing new, Just uploading a bunch of my old drawings.
However, i think its quite interesting to scroll through as i`ve sequenced everything so that i have my oldest drawings at the bottom of this post and my newest drawings at the top so its kind like my progression. So my suggestion, scroll to the very bottom of this post and work your way up, i provide comments along the way (^_^)b

Cable & Deadpool

Kinda tricky drawing Iron Man. Damn suit makes things very difficult

Love drawing the Hulk. Its soooo fun. You can draw the most ridiculous muscles on this guy and its kinda ok because its the Hulk :p

X-Men:Origins was coming out, i was hyped.

...and then brought to life digitally

A sketch i drew whilst i was in a Marketing lecture....

Inspired by Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk

A collage of most of my Marvel drawings

This drawing of the Hulk still amazes me. For me, its perfect in every way.

Planet Hulk cover remake. except, i hate Doc Samson so i replaced him with Punisher :p

This drawing was also printed in an issue of Ghost Rider. I cant remember the issue of this one either but i have 2 copies of it at home :D

Just a scene from Punisher

My last Turner Variant remake

Haha and they printed my drawings in a Ghost Rider comic!!!! I was soooo happy when i picked up this copy of Ghost Rider and found my drawings in there. Though what they printed is not what i wrote in my mail :s.

Wolverine Origins - Another remake

I was asked by somebody to make a cover that had Magneto fighting Iceman & Cyclops. One of my favourite drawings! I put them on Turner D. Century`s tandem bike. Those Idiots! its made of metal! :p

Female drawing success!! i remade a She Hulk cover to try and work on my drawing skills and as a request from a friend.

Whilst most people busied themselves with the Civil War event, they werent really looking at what was happening in the cosmos. Annihilation is my favourite large scale Marvel event. It made me really care about some characters that i disliked before like Super Skrull and Nova

Moon Knight is an awesome character, kind of a Batman rip off but still, that last MAX series was incredible.

I had never really read Ghost Rider before but as soon as i started, i was hooked. I never really knew where to start before and so i created this comic book cover completely from scratch. I then later sent this in to Marvel Comics just as some fan mail.....

Another Civil war Turner remake

Civil War X-Men #1 Turner Variant remake

Punisher: Barracuda. This was another remake from a scene in the Punisher Max series

My remake of the Civil War #1 variant by Michael Turner. I think it was all these remakes that really propelled my skills. I then later sent some of my Turner cover remakes to Aspen comics and got a really nice reply:
"He loved them! With a big grin on his face Mike said
"Woah - Those Are Awesome"
and then we spent like 15 minutes looking at your myspace account!"
Unfortunately, Michael Turner died last year at the age of 37
RIP

This was the first time somebody asked me to make my own version of a Marvel comic book cover. I`d say this was the most challenging thing i had to draw up until that moment. Rain and stuff? i couldn`t draw that crap! but impressively i managed to pull it off and a series of comic book cover remakes followed from this point.

Inspired by the Planet Hulk event. Which started off great and ended up in a cluster f*** of crap, pointless tie-ins.

I love the Silver Surfer. I think that of all the superhero origins, his was my favourite and in particular i always felt kinda moved by his desire to get back home to his planet. More importantly, to the woman he loved. This drawing however, is pretty terrible.

"I`m The Juggernaut Bitch". Remember that line from the X-Men 3 movie? That line was actually inspired by an internet parody. Well the guys who made that parody saw my drawing, loved it and asked if they could use it for the intro to their next Juggernaut cartoon parody.
My first claim to fame ;D. This affiliation with that video actually resulted in me receiving emails from feminists who didnt like some of the things Juggernaut was saying in those videos.

Cute Huh? :D

Look at how cute General Ross is!! ^v^
Well at this point i really couldnt draw well at all but i think for this drawing, the oversized and anatomically incorrect muscles are perfect. notice the complete absence of knees, feet, ears and noses. This continues throughout! lol although i have started to find it easier to draw these parts now but honestly, i prefer to leave out ears and noses because i think it takes away some of the charm in my drawings
